Carnus hemapterus Nitzsch

Diagnosis:
Distinguished from occidentalis by the relatively longer surstylus (apical width/total length 0.40) (fig. 6), and by the long paraphysis in lateral view (0.54 greatest width/length). Separated from orientalis by having a wider interocular distance; cheek deeper; abdominal sternites (males) rectangular; abdominal pleural membrane with setulae more numberous in both sexes; female tergites smaller. (Grimaldi 1997: 6)

Palaearctic Region: widespread in Europe; Israel, Japan; Nearctic Region: widespread.

Biology:
Adults loose their wings and live hemiparasitic on bird nestlings. The larvae develop in various kinds of bird's nests. Summary see Grimaldi 1997 : 6. There have been a number of recent papers on ecology of Carnus hemapterus (filter the bibliographic tool for the keyword 'hemapterus')

Diagnosis:
Wings usually broken off, leaving a short stub; if wing complete, crossvein dm-cu absent. Female with abdominal sternites 1-5 absent; membrane with numerous setiferous sclerotized spots. Consists of 5 species.

Mainly Nearctic Region, but occurs also in the Palaearctic and Oriental Regions.

Biology:
The larvae develop in various kinds of bird's nests, adults loose their wings and live hemiparasitic on the nestlings.
