Slender flies, 1.8-7.5 mm long, yellow to black, ornamented with markings of various size and shape, dull to shining, rarely pruinose. Wing fumous hyaline, frequently with apex variably clouded, and sometimes more extensively marked. Face, gena and legs sometimes sexually dimorphic in colorations.
